South Korea Safety, EMC, Radio and Telecommunications KC Product Approvals

EMC, Radio and Telecom are mandatory for the South Korean markets, Safety is mandatory for some IT equipment. The Ministry of Economy MKE/ATS is the regulating body. Testing is conducted to the KN standards by accredited certifications labs. There is no expiration date for the certifications, however annual factory inspections are required in some cases. CB reports are accepted for Safety certification and reports from local or MRA accredited labs can issue EMC reports. KC marking must be included on the product with the certificate number and documentation must be in Korean.

Specific Details for KC Safety Approval

Authority is planning to add more ITE in the list of mandatory approvals (local safety tests)

  • Energy Efficiency tests are mandatory for external power supplies
  • In some cases, EMC test reports (KN standards) are required for the safety approval
  • Factory inspection must be done by the accredited bodies/labs or bodies under agreements (MOU)
  • During the factory inspection, the auditor has to select a product for partial re-testing
  • Safety regulations for IT Equipment are under development (together with RRA

Specific Details for KS EMC, Radio and Telecom Approval

  • Very demanding with test reports
  • Different configuration demands tests on each configuration.
  • Accepts one report for family/series approval only if the other models of the family/series are depopulate (identical with less components)
  • Tests can be done in USA if the lab has KN standards in the accredited scope (under MRA - traceable to NIST: A2LA, NVLAP, etc)
  • Requirements are merging with Safety.
  • EMC tests must be done in a 10m chamber
