India Safety, Radio and Telecommunications Product Approvals BIS, WPC, TEC

Approval for safety is mandatory for some IT Equipment, Radio is mandatory for unlicensed bands, and Telecom is mandatory for telecom interfaces, not Ethernet. There is no certification required for EMC.

India Safety Certification Details BIS

The WPC is the regulating body for the safety certification approvals in India, the BIS Safety Certification. Testing is conducted to local IS standards in-country and certificates are issued by the BIS. Turnaround time is around 6-8 weeks and English is acceptable for documentation.

Some of the documents required for approval are BIS: Manual, Photos, Block Diagrams, Schematics, etc.

BIS has added some ITE in the list of mandatory equipment

•        Regulation is not very clear and not aligned with customs

•        There are exemptions for HSE

•        Radio access points are exempted

•        Samples are required for local tests (tests/approval is per factory !!)

India Radio (Short Range Device) Certification Details WPC

The WPC Type Approval is required for de-licensed bands and testing is conducted to international standards (EN, ETSI, and FCC). Certificates are issued by the WPC and foreign test reports are acceptable. The turnaround time is 3-4 weeks and English is acceptable for documentation.

WPC radio type approval is mandatory for unlicensed bands, like: 13.56 and 400 MHz, 2.4 and 5 GHz (5.150 - 5.350, 5.725 – 5875 and 5.825 - 5.875 GHz)

India Telecommunication Product Certification Details - TEC

The TEC Type Approval is required for telecom equipment in India. International and national standards are used for testing, certificates are issued by the TEC and are valid for three years. Local testing is required for telecom and foreign reports are acceptable for EMC. Turnaround time is typically 9-11 weeks and English is acceptable for documentation.

TEC approval demands tests in India laboratories and there are special EMC requirements for telecom equipment.
