Environmental testing has been a major component of NTS services since our founding in 1961. Military and commercial standards such as MIL-STD-810 and RTCA/DO-160 include sections for thermal shock, icing, freezing rain, and hail impact.

Thermal shock testing  lies at the most severe end of the spectrum of temperature tests performed by NTS. Thermal shock refers to a very high rate of temperature change and is generally conducted on aircraft components, military hardware and electronics designed to withstand harsh environments.

Because almost all products are subject to shipping, this test may be appropriate for any part that will have to withstand an abrupt temperature change in a short period of time, such as a transition from environmentally controlled storage to the varying environments encountered during transport.

Air-to-air thermal shock testing is the most common test performed at our laboratories. It is conducted by moving the test article from one extreme temperature to another on a mechanical conveyor or elevator, depending upon the orientation of the chambers. Fully enclosed thermal shock test chambers keep the equipment stationary while the chamber temperature cycles.

For very large items that cannot be moved by an in-chamber elevator, NTS can provide fixtures and the right setup to meet applicable test specification requirements while assuring the safety of the test item. In one such case, NTS engineers in Boxborough, MA were faced with the challenge of performing icing testing a on a tall telescoping antenna while it was under operation. A custom 23’ x 7’ 7” chamber with temperature controls was built to accommodate this extreme test.

Other examples of specialty thermal shock testing include a liquid-to-liquid system in which a basket is utilized to mechanically transfer a test article from one vat to another for a higher transfer rate of greater thermal energy. NTS also performs cryogenic testing for launch vehicles, satellites, and related hardware. Two large capacity LN2 pits are available for testing that requires either simple atmospheric or highly pressurized sub-freezing temperature shock.

The Motor City goes Electric

Gas_vs_Hybrid2NTS Detroit is the newest place for complete motor testing. With high-power battery simulators, environmental chambers already integrated with motor wiring, and fluid conditioners for both oil and glycol applications, it is a turn-key solution for developing your hybrid or EV motor products. Along with the equipment comes experience- since 2010, NTS has tested motors for a variety of platforms ranging from ICE hybrid electric assist vehicles to fully-electric supercars. Some of the testing options currently available are:

Back-to-Back Durability- This configuration uses NTS’s control software and fixturing to test two motors simultaneously, rather than using independent dynamometers for each. Energy is saved, equipment needs are minimized, and a system of this type provides the maximum test output for the minimum investment.  NTS Detroit operates on a 24/7 basis, and has tested up to eight motors in a single environmental chamber simultaneously, using our custom control system.

Environmental Testing – All of the Back-to-Back fixtures are intended to be exposed to harsh environmental conditions, including high and low temperatures and high humidity. Often referred to as Powered Thermal Cycle, High Temperature Operating, and High Humidity Endurance, NTS Detroit has the chamber capacity to perform all of these tests in parallel so you can deliver on time.

Performance and Thermal Profiling – NTS Detroit has experience with your most extreme motor profiles. Using precision thermal imaging and cutaway motor components, detailed thermal profiles can be created from actual components for comparison to FEA model results. The NTS Dynamometer department is capable of testing motors up to 1200 Hp, with high-speed systems up to 15,000 rpm. Many of our motor drives are regenerative, returning absorbed power back to the electrical bus, thus saving costs.

System Integration – Each motor typically requires its own power electronics that must be controlled for safe, consistent operation. NTS Detroit has developed custom software using National Instruments architecture for safely controlling up to 10 motors simultaneously, with power electronic parameters and analog signals captured for constant limit monitoring. This allows for complicated operational profiles to be repeated reliably, offering flexibility for adapting to most test specifications.

NTS Silicon Valley Opening New Test Laboratory

Climatic, Environmental and Dynamics Testing Capabilities Added To Portfolio of Services
NTS Silicon Valley division is adding a new custom-built Climatic, Environmental and Dynamics Product Testing Laboratory in close proximity to their existing test laboratories in Fremont and Sunnyvale, California. The new location is over 30,000 square feet, and will house a wide range of state-of-the-art testing equipment.
