Mechanical Engineer (Computational Physics)

Job Description:

NTS in Dana Point, CA is seeking a Sr. Physicist. This position will play a pivotal role in supporting our customer requirements for project engineering, modeling, and analysis. NTS is a premier provider of third party test and evaluation services to the defense, aerospace, and telecommunications industries. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Development of mathematical models of Defense and Aerospace systems, specifically related to energetic materials and systems (propulsion, warheads, etc.) and the implementation of numerical methods and code development to utilize these models to predict behavior of complex systems
  • Apply knowledge of physics principles to the design and development of custom test apparatus, including specification of instrumentation and data acquisition requirements
  • Modeling of ordnance and propulsion systems using state of the art hydrocodes and computational physics software (LS-Dyna, ALE3D, CTH, etc.)
  • Project engineering to include test plan and test procedure preparation, test fixture design, test program execution, and test reporting, failure analysis/corrective action investigations
  • Analysis and post-processing of test data to provide insight into system behavior during test
  • Development of new and unique test methodologies related to defense and aerospace systems, subsystems, components, and materials

Required Education /Skills/ Experience:

  • Must be eligible to work in the US without sponsorship and able to pass a DMV and background check
  • BS, MS or PhD in Physics, Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering AND must possess 5+ years of relevant work experience with computational physics modeling OR we may consider an entry level recent PhD graduate in Physics, Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with relative internship, project or some work experience in lieu of 5 years of work experience
  • Experience using computation tools (scripted and/or compiled languages) to solve complex numerical problems
  • Experience in the Defense and or Aeropsace industries is highly desired
  • Excellent computer skills required; knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to tolerate stress and work in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to share skills and knowledge with others and to delegate responsibility

Desired Education /Skills/ Experience:

  • Experience with instrumentation, collection, and processing of dynamic test data (acceleration, force, pressure, strain, etc.) is a plus
  • Experience with testing of Defense or Aerospace components or products, specifically in the areas of dynamics, environmental, and/or energetics is a plus
  • Experience with computational physics modeling tools such as LS-Dyna, CTH, ALE3D, Abaqus, or similar explicit hydrocodes
  • Knowledge of interior ballistics concepts and/or computations tools such as PRODAS a plus
  • Experience with carbon fiber composite materials and methods of fabrication a plus
  • Understanding Military and Aerospace compliance standards
