Chief Engineer (Electrical or Physics)

NTS is seeking a Chief Engineer (Electrical or Physics). This is an opportunity to join a highly regarded company with a worldwide reputation for excellence in our technology areas.  Successful candidates will have the opportunity to “think outside the box” and suggest clever solutions to unusual protection design constraints, and to oversee a project’s progress from planning to completion.  LTI/NTS performs research, design, test, consulting and training for protection of a wide variety of systems against the hazards of lightning and other electrical phenomena, especially to the aircraft and aerospace, defense, and alternative energy industries.  We are considered by many to be the world leaders in lightning protection design and simulated lightning protection verification testing.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide high level engineering design support for customers all over the world including simulated lightning tests on structures and electronic systems at our laboratories in Pittsfield, Massachusetts as well at customer’s facilities domestically and abroad
  • Research into electrical properties of advanced materials on air vehicles in low and high altitude environments
  • Calculations of electric and magnetic fields and interactions with systems
  • Engineering design of protection for a wide variety of air vehicles, ground facilities, and systems
  • Preparation of certification plans to address airworthiness authority, IEC  or industrial requirements and standards
  • Provide Consultant DER services to overseas client in the area of Electrical Wiring Interconnection System

Required Education/Skills/Experience:

  • Must be eligible to work in the US without sponsorship and able to pass a drug test and a DMV and extensive background check
  • Applicant should have a Master Degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics. A Ph.D. is strongly preferred
  • Minimum 15 years experience in the area of FAA Certification Requirements as well as Electro-magnetic, transients in electric circuits, high voltage phenomenology. Ionization processes, transients in electric circuits, electric power engineering
  • Ability to apply the first principles of physics to understand and predict lightning effects is critical
  • 15 years electrical engineering experience in one or more of the following areas: Electro-magnetic, transients in electric circuits, high voltage phenomenology. Ionization processes, transients in electric circuits, electric power engineering. Ability to apply the first principles of physics to understand and predict lightning effects is important to success
  • Skills in numerical simulations using PSPICE, ANSOFT, COMSOL, or similar computational tools are desirable
  • Teaching experience in one or more of the following areas: Electro-magnetic, transients in electric circuits, high voltage phenomenology. Ionization processes, transients in electric circuits, electric power engineering, is desirable, as we offer periodic training courses in these technologies
  • Must be able to travel 50% of the time including internationally
  • Applicant needs to have excellent communication skills, organizational skills and a customer-centered viewpoint
  • Applicant will be required to participate in the preparation of FAA certification plans and will be required to submit written monthly reports

Licenses and Certifications:

Applicant should have a current FAA DER (Designated Engineering Representative) Consultancy. Our consultancy areas fall under:

  • Lightning effects for Part 33 (engines) lightning effects for Part 23, 25, 27, and 29 aircraft
  • Electrical Systems and Equipment for Part 23, 25, 27, and 29 aircraft
  • Mechanical Systems and Equipment (Part 23, 25, 27, and 29)
  • Powerplant (23, 25, 27, and 29)
  • Propellers (Part 35)
  • Structures (23, 25, 27, and 29)

Working Conditions:

Applicant will be providing consulting services and will travel to customer facility in Japan to attend meetings and may be required on a limited basis to inspect aircraft in production on the factory floor.
